Obnova, Bojan Mrđenović

(fotografije, 2011. – 2019.)

The Reconstruction, Bojan Mrđenović

(photographs, 2011. – 2019.)

The houses of civilians in Croatian borderline that were ruined in the 1990s wars were restored by the Republic of Croatia in a project colloquially known as “The Reconstruction”.
This microregion, which can be, in a wider context, put as a borderline between West and East Europe, has a historical continuity in social and political instability and turbulence. It was crossed by the Roman limes, in the Middle Ages it became the forerunner of Christianity in the defense of Europe from the Turks, and by the 20th century it belonged to the border territory of the great empires, in that area the National Liberation battle took place in the WWII as well as the war of the 1990s, and today it represents the borderline of the European Union through which the migrant route is passing.

However, this area does not give the impression of a historical stage. In the paradigm of the developments it represents a historical margin of the Western world, which has suffered the shifts of various systems, always reaffirming its position as a peripheral. At a time of increasing globalization and centralization of power, it continually functions as a periphery of a periphery, a region from which people emigrate, because life in it is almost impossible, without the privilege of enjoying the civilization progress that is achieved in the center. In the current situation of the migrant crisis, The Reconstruction is not an exception, but an element of continuity in the paradigm of destruction that goes on in the name of civilization progress and development.

This piece will be presented in the gallery Podroom at the Cultural Center of Belgrade from 4.07. to 25.7. within the exhibition, Silence is deafness here.
